Luis A. Caffarelli

Luis A. Caffarelli (b. 1948 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a worldwide famous mathematician working in the field of partial differential equations.

Caffarelli obtained his Master thesis and PhD degree at University of Buenos Aires. His PhD advisor was Calixto Calderón. Caffarelli has worked for many prestigious institutions including University of Minnesota, University of Chicago, Courant Institute and Institute of Advanced Study. He is currently working at University of Texas at Austin.

Among his many contributions are his groundbreaking works on the free boundary problem and his regularity theorems for wide classes of nonlinear equations. Methods introduced by Caffarelli are nowadays classical.

Caffarelli has obtained numerous scientific prizes including Leroy P. Steele Prize (2009) and Wolf Prize in Mathematics (2012). He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
